The Appalachian Veterans Arts & Humanities Collective, in collaboration with Blurred Boundaries, will host “Women, The Military, War & Its Aftermath” to explore the importance of women’s voices regarding military service, war, its aftermath, and the nearly invisible role of women and families left stateside. This residency will not only provide a forum for their experiences, and stories, but it will also encourage other women to tell their own stories.
The keynote speaker and workshop facilitator will be award-winning poet Jehanne Dubrow, whose collections of poems Stateside and Dots and Dashes examine her own experiences as a Navy wife looking at the before, during and after of her husband’s deployment.
Dubrow’s perspective of the military wife represents an entirely new voice in the poetry of war. Dubrow will offer a public reading of her work, on Friday evening, April 13, accompanied by a question and answer session,
On Saturday, April 14, Dubrow will offer 3-hour writing workshop for all interested writers. In addition, on the 14th, there will also be a panel discussion on the impact of war on women. Panelists include Dubrow; Vietnam War nurse and poet, Mary Hennessy; Iraq War army colonel, combat veteran, and writer Pam Harvey, also the mother of a combat veteran; Beth Ann Koelsch, the curator of the Betty H. Carter Women Veterans Historical Project at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and Mollye Anna Maxner, Professor of Drama at UNC School of the Arts, award-winning playwright, teacher, and daughter of a Vietnam combat veteran. Dr. Lynn Searfoss, Appalachian State professor, writer, and daughter of a Korean War veteran and mother of an Iraq War combat veteran, will chair the panel.
