Gettysburg is a famous instance of the “fog of war.” Some questions to consider are: Of what were the opposing armies uncertain? How did they make decisions in the face of this uncertainty? How is this uncertainty presented in the film, both through cinemagraphic techniques and musical scoring? How is the representation of physical space depicted at various stages of the battle?
View and discuss as a group Matthew Brady’s and Alexander Gardner’s photographs of the battlefield. How are space and boundaries reflected in these images? Do the images clarify the battle? How do these images limit understanding of the conflict?
