Discussion Session 2 — The Civil War in Appalachia
Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Belk Library 421
- Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier
- The World Made Straight, dir. David Burris
Discuss Cold Mountain and The World Made Straight. Think about how Frazier presents the Home Guard. Does a familial, social, or historical relationship to the border area of the Civil War encourage other attitudes toward the militia units in this area during the Civil War? How do both does Frazier’s novel and The World Made Straight reflect uncertain or shifting loyalties or attitudes toward the conflict? How are uncertain loyalties or shifting loyalties reflected in your own experiences of conflict? If war is a “continuation of politics by other means” how does this enact itself out at the most local level of communities and families.
